To commemorate our 50th anniversary in majestic style, Spyderco—with the incredible support of expert blacksmiths Ed Schempp and his son Martin—created an extraordinary expression of our iconic Native® 5. It faithfully maintains all the key features and benefits of this time-tested design, while delivering them with premium materials and impeccable craftsmanship. The brightly polished blade of this remarkable knife is full-flat ground from CPM® S90V®— an advanced powder metallurgy stainless steel enriched with vanadium. CPM S90V's high vanadium content favors the formation of hard vanadium carbides instead of chromium carbides, increasing the steel's wear resistance and edge-holding properties while leaving additional free chromium available to enhance corrosion resistance.
The blade is mated to the knife’s handle by a precision-machined back lock mechanism that is one of the defining characteristics of the Native 5’s design. That lock is housed within a handle that represents a phenomenal blend of manufacturing precision and old-school artistry. It is built on a foundation of full stainless steel liners that are meticulously machined on their edges to create a decorative filework pattern reminiscent of the finest custom knives. In timeless style, the dovetailed handle scales are crafted from amber-colored bone and beautifully polished to a high luster. To fulfill the knife’s identity as a Spyderco CLIPIT® design, the handle includes a polished hourglass clip configured for right-side tip-up carry.
The most distinctive elements of this knife, however, are its mosaic Damascus steel bolsters, which are crafted from bars meticulously forged by Ed Schempp and his son Martin. Beginning with solid billets of 1084 and 15N20 tool steel, Ed and Martin’s incredibly complex process involves countless steps, including forging, grinding, water-jet cutting, welding, stress relieving, forge welding, and drawing to finished bars. The Damascus bars are then precision cut to reveal a contrasting checkerboard pattern of 36 squares, each containing Spyderco’s signature “bug” logo. The result of a year-long process involving more than 1,200 hours of painstaking work, this remarkable material is then precision machined and dovetailed to achieve an exacting fit on the knife’s handle. It is also acid etched to maximize the contrast of its intricate pattern.
Indisputably the most distinctive production knife we have ever created, this incredible expression of the Native 5 is further highlighted by a handsome wooden display box. The box is custom-crafted from solid African Padauk, an exotic reddish-orange hardwood that naturally darkens with time to a deep brown. Proudly laser engraved with Spyderco’s 50th anniversary logo, this stunning box is the perfect display for this extraordinary and highly collectible tribute to our company’s history and the knifemaker’s art. For every box created, a tree will also be planted to help replenish our planet’s resources.
