In the cutlery world, some knives stand out above the rest, transcending popularity to become truly iconic. Often, this elite status is backed by a rich history of painstaking development and design innovation. Spyderco’s Para Military 2 is a shining example of this phenomenon.

The Military™ Model: The Foundation

The roots of the Para Military 2 trace all the way back to one of Spyderco’s other classic designs, the Military™ Model. Introduced in 1996, the concept for the original Military began with a question from one of our customers: “If your child was going into the military service, what knife would you give him?” Taking that question to heart, Spyderco co-founder Sal Glesser designed the Military from the ground up as the ideal cutting tool for forward-deployed military personnel. It featured a broad, full-flat-ground blade, lightweight, open-backed handle construction, and a user-friendly LinerLock mechanism. Its blade also included an oversized Trademark Round Hole™ for swift, ambidextrous, one-handed opening—even while wearing gloves. Specifically designed for tip-down carry, the Military featured a single-position, triangular-based pocket clip engineered to withstand the rigors of being carried in the field.

These defining qualities immediately attracted a devoted following among duty-bound personnel, as well as a broad audience of other knife users. Bolstered by its numerous variations, the Military Model ultimately earned a coveted reputation as one of the industry’s most recognized models and a centerpiece of the Spyderco product line.

The First Para Military

Despite the Military’s immense popularity, some users found it too large for convenient carry. Its formidable four-inch blade also exceeded the blade-length restrictions in some jurisdictions.

A More Compact, More Versatile Design

Based on feedback from countless customers, Sal Glesser set about creating a downsized version of the Military that delivered the same proven reliability and cutting performance, but in a more compact, easy-to-carry package. He also wanted it to showcase his then-new lock mechanism, the Compression Lock®. The result of those efforts was the first-generation Para Military.

Introduced in 2004, the Para Military maintained the same standard profile as the Military but scaled it down by approximately 17 percent. It also incorporated Sal’s revolutionary Compression Lock mechanism. Significantly stronger than a typical LinerLock mechanism, the Compression Lock’s location on the spine of the handle allows the blade to be closed without placing your fingers in the path of the edge. It also greatly reduces the chances of inadvertently releasing the lock during hard use.

Early Construction and Variations

Like other first-generation Compression Lock designs, the Para Military’s detent—the feature that keeps the blade in the closed position—consisted of a machined “ledge” in the ricasso of the blade. That ledge indexed the edge of the lock bar when the blade was folded so the knife would remain closed and could be safely carried in the pocket. The original Para Military also shared the Military Model’s single-position pocket clip, which had a sturdy triangular base and offered right-side, tip-down carry only.

The inaugural version of the Para Military featured black G-10 handle scales and a choice of PlainEdge™ or SpyderEdge™ CPM® S30V® stainless steel blade. It was very well received by our customers and soon inspired other variations, including versions with non-reflective, black-coated blades, digital camouflage G-10 handle scales, and even a limited-edition Sprint Run® expression with a CPM D2 blade. As good as it was, however, we knew there was still room for improvement.

The Para Military® 2

Consistent with Spyderco’s relentless commitment to Constant Quality Improvement (C.Q.I.), after several years we decided to redesign the Para Military to make it even more functional and versatile.

A Second-Generation Redesign

Appropriately, the person who championed the second generation of the design was a second generation himself: Sal’s son, Eric Glesser. educated in industrial design, Eric completely reimagined the Para Military to yield the highly refined Para Military 2. Introduced in 2010, it faithfully maintains the spirit of the design, while polishing it with enhanced ergonomics and aesthetics.

Functional Improvements

From a functional standpoint, the Para Military 2 added an improved ball-bearing lock detent that holds the blade closed even more reliably, while offering an exceptionally smooth opening action. The partial nested liners of the original were replaced with larger, skeletonized stainless steel liners that provided enhanced structural strength while keeping the knife slim and lightweight. Unlike the proud, button-head pivot screws of the original, the second-generation design features countersunk screws that make both sides of the handle perfectly flat. This subtle, but important, change—together with the addition of the larger liners—paved the way for the addition of a four-position pocket clip. Compared to the single-position clip of its predecessor, this feature expanded the knife’s carry options to include a choice of right- or left-side, tip-up or tip-down orientation. The diameter of handle’s lined lanyard tube was also increased significantly to more easily accommodate the attachment of fobs, lanyards, and safety lines.

Showcasing the design talents of two generations of Glessers—and proudly bearing both their distinctive designer’s marks—Para Military 2 elevated an already-popular original design to become one of Spyderco’s most successful and iconic models. The earliest variations of the design featured either a satin or black Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coated CPM S30V blade and a black or digital camouflage G-10 handle. All found immediate favor with astute knife users and soon prompted interest in other expressions of the design.

Production Variations

Initially, we responded to that calling with limited-edition Sprint Run versions showcasing unique blade steels and handle materials.

Full-Production Steel Variations

In 2015, we added a full-production variation of the Para Military 2 featuring Crucible® CPM S110V®. This state-of-the-art powder metallurgy steel contains high amounts of vanadium and niobium, giving it exceptional wear resistance and enhanced corrosion resistance. Consistent with our practice of pairing elite steels with signature handle colors, the peel-ply-textured G-10 scales of this Para Military 2 are a distinctive midnight blue color.

Two years later, we introduced another full-production version of the design featuring gray G-10 scales and a blade crafted from ultra-tough Micro-Melt® Maxamet®. Developed by Carpenter® Technology Corporation, one of the world’s premier suppliers of high-performance steels, Maxamet is a super-hard high-speed tool steel produced by the powder metallurgy process. Its complex formulation gives it properties that transcend conventional high-speed tool steels and approach those of cemented carbides—the ultra-hard materials used to machine other steels. Carpenter created Maxamet specifically for use in the rollers of their state-of-the-art steel rolling mills. Rolling and shaping hot steel demands an alloy that is incredibly hard and tough and can retain those properties at extremely high temperatures. Maxamet meets those challenges head on and also offers qualities that give it extraordinary potential for use in other applications.

Spyderco is one of only a handful of companies to successfully develop the specialized methods necessary to machine, heat treat, and grind Maxamet to yield reliable, high-performance knife blades. The result, however, is an ultra-hard cutting edge that offers phenomenal cutting performance and edge retention.

After extensive in-house performance testing, in 2021, Spyderco transitioned all the base versions of the Para Military 2 from CPM S30V to Crucible’s newly developed CPM S45VN®, which remains the standard for them today.

The “Cru-Carta” Para Military® 2

That same year, based on the extreme popularity of our unique “Cru-Carta” theme, we added a version of the Para Military 2 featuring a CPM CRU-WEAR® tool steel blade and Micarta® handle scales. An air-hardening tool steel specially formulated to offer both superior wear resistance and toughness, CRU-WEAR’s advanced alloy composition allows it to excel in applications that require greater wear resistance than D2, more toughness than M2 high speed steel, or both. CPM CRU-WEAR is further enhanced by the Crucible Particle Metallurgy (CPM) process, which ensures an ultra-fine, extremely homogeneous grain structure that maximizes the performance potential of the steel.

Unlike the nested liners of most Para Military 2 variants, the brown canvas Micarta scales of the “Cru-Carta” version are supported by full skeletonized stainless steel liners. This feature further showcases the knife’s distinctive “old-school” materials, which are intended to naturally patina with age, handling, and use. Over time, this will give this unique version of the Para Military 2 tremendous character that reflects the rich tradition and history behind its design.

Para Military 2 featuring SPY27 steel on a workbench.

CPM SPY27®

In 2023, we added an expression of the design highlighting our proprietary blade steel—CPM SPY27®. Based on the proven track record of VG-10 cobalt-enriched stainless steel, SPY27 supercharges its alloy formula with the addition of niobium, nitrogen, molybdenum, and higher volumes of carbon and vanadium. It also adds the benefits of the particle metallurgy process to ensure an exceptionally fine microstructure and uniform distribution of the alloys throughout the steel’s matrix. Found only on select Spyderco knives, in the Para Military 2, this steel is further showcased by pairing it with distinctive cobalt blue G-10 handle scales.

Para Military® 2 Salt® Models

CPM MagnaCut®

Both our Para Military 2 Salt models showcase a revolutionary knife steel called CPM MagnaCut®. Conceived by Larrin Thomas, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and son of renowned Damascus steel maker Devin Thomas, MagnaCut’s finely tuned mixture of alloys challenges conventional stainless steel chemistry. It reduces the amount of chromium in the steel to a precise range while adding vanadium and niobium. The result is a state-of-the-art blade steel that offers an exceptional balance of edge retention, toughness, and extreme corrosion resistance.

High-Visibility and Tactical Salt Variants

Taking full advantage of these remarkable qualities, the first Para Military 2 Salt features a full-flat-ground, satin-finished blade with a PlainEdge cutting edge. It is paired with a handle featuring G-10 scales with alternating black and yellow layers. The scales are meticulously machined with Spyderco’s signature Caribbean Bi-Directional Texture™ pattern, which reveals the underlying yellow layer to create a high-visibility, color-contrasting, non-slip texture. Consistent with its Salt theme, its nested liners, four-position pocket clip, and all other hardware are crafted from fearlessly corrosion-resistant marine-grade materials.

Optimized for tactical environments where light discipline is a concern, the second version of the Para Military 2 Salt features a low-profile, all-black theme. Its full-flat-ground blade is also crafted from MagnaCut and is cloaked in a non-reflective Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating. The PlainEdge blade is housed in a handle featuring peel-ply-textured black G-10 scales that are also machined with our signature Caribbean Bi-Directional Texture pattern for an ultra-secure grip. To complement its blade steel and finish, the knife’s nested liners, four-position pocket clip, and all other hardware are also made from ultra-corrosion-resistant materials and have non-reflective black coatings.

Exclusives and Sprint Run® Models

An Exclusive is a special configuration of an established Spyderco model that is produced for a single wholesale customer or distributor. Although multiple runs of it may be made, as its name suggests, it is exclusive to that customer and commercially available only through them. Qualifying dealers and distributors that want to “corner the market” on a unique variant of a Spyderco knife can ask to commission an entire production run of that knife. They then control all sales of it into the consumer marketplace.

Para Military® 2 Exclusives

As a further testament to its iconic status, the Para Military 2 is an incredibly popular canvas for limited-edition Exclusives. To date, there have been more than 60 Para Military 2 Exclusives produced, showcasing distinctive combinations of blade steels, coatings, handle materials, textures, blade shapes, and other features.

Sprint Run® Expressions

Like an Exclusive, a Sprint Run is a special production run of a knife not found in our regular product line. It may be a distinctive version of a current model or a special expression of a discontinued design, but either way, every Sprint Run is a unique, one-time-only event. Not surprisingly, the Para Military 2 has also been a platform for numerous Sprint Run limited-edition variations.
